Once an essential silk belt worn with a tuxedo, it has taken on a completely new form and function in the hands of designers and is no longer limited to formal dress codes.
The story of the cummerbund dates back to 19th-century India, where British officers discovered the traditional garment. In the hot climate, Indian officers chose lightweight silk waistbands instead of heavy waistcoats. The style later made its way into Western fashion, becoming an essential part of formal dress.
This year, designers have taken the silk waistband out of its classic setting and brought it into everyday wardrobes. At Celine, Michael Rider presented it in burgundy and pink tones, pairing it with wide-leg trousers and jazz-inspired shoes.
