If you’re seeking the perfect mountain resort experience that seamlessly blends unique cultural immersion with adrenaline-fueled fun, Georgia’s winter resorts—Gudauri, Mestia, Bakuriani, and Goderdzi—are the ultimate choice. What’s your priority: extreme freeriding, cozy family comfort, a historic setting, or an international competition calendar? This short guide will delve into the distinct advantages of all four resorts.

Gudauri

Gudauri stands out for those who see winter sports not merely as a pastime, but as a source of inspiration. Located in the Kazbegi Municipality, just 120 kilometres from Tbilisi, the resort offers both accessibility and a striking alpine setting.

Gudauri’s distinctive geographical position, at 2,200 metres above sea level, ensures consistently soft, high-quality snow and generous snowfall throughout the season. These natural conditions laid the foundation for the resort’s development, marked by the launch of its first ropeway in 1988.

Today, Gudauri seamlessly connects the Kobi and Gudauri ski areas via a state-of-the-art lift system. From the gondolas, sweeping alpine panoramas unfold, setting the stage for an engaging mountain experience. With slopes ranging from green and blue to red and black, the resort caters equally to beginners and seasoned skiers, offering a balanced sense of progression and adventure.

Modern infrastructure, meticulously maintained pistes, and reliable snow conditions make Gudauri an ideal venue for competitive sport. As a result, the resort regularly hosts world-class events, including prestigious competitions sanctioned by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), firmly positioning Gudauri on the global sports map.

Beyond the competitive arena, Gudauri presents a diverse range of winter activities that extend well beyond conventional skiing. Thrill-seekers can explore heli-skiing, paragliding, and advanced freeriding, while a panoramic gondola journey via Kobi to Stepantsminda offers a quieter, more contemplative counterpoint — an opportunity to experience the region’s dramatic landscapes at a slower, more reflective pace.

Mestia

Nestled at 1,500 metres above sea level, between the Greater Caucasus and Svaneti ranges in the Samegrelo–Zemo Svaneti region, Mestia is a revelation for those seeking not merely a holiday, but a deeply immersive experience.

A short domestic flight from Natakhtari or Kutaisi brings visitors to Upper Svaneti in just 30–40 minutes. This is a land defined by its iconic Svan towers and striking medieval architecture — landmarks so distinctive they are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The resort seamlessly unites two exceptional ski areas, Hatsvali and Tetnuldi, offering a harmonious blend of leisure, slopes of varying difficulty, and a profound immersion in Svan culture.

The international profile of Mestia’s ski areas continues to grow. Hatsvali, located just 8 kilometres from Mestia, presents a well-balanced option, with gentle blue slopes ideal for beginners, alongside more demanding red and black runs suited to seasoned skiers.

Tetnuldi, by contrast, stands out for its dramatic terrain and abundant snowfall, making it especially appealing to professional skiers and snowboarders. Its top-tier conditions create an ideal stage for elite competition. In recent years, Tetnuldi has earned its reputation as the “Home of Freeride,” a status reinforced on 29 February 2024, when the Freeride World Tour (FWT) Georgia Pro was held here for the first time in Georgia’s history. As a result, Tetnuldi joined an exclusive group of six global destinations set to host the Freeride World Tour for four consecutive years. Mestia thus emerges as a singular destination, where world-class extreme sports are set against the awe-inspiring historical backdrop of a UNESCO heritage site.

Bakuriani

Located in the Borjomi Municipality at an altitude of 1,700 metres above sea level, Bakuriani is distinguished by its unique coniferous forests and crystal-clear air, making it a refined destination for eco-luxury and restorative mountain escapes. The resort is ideal for comfortable and family-oriented holidays.

Bakuriani encompasses three primary and magnificent ski areas: Didveli, Kokhta, and Mitarbi. With a total track length of 36 kilometres and a peak altitude of 3,200 metres, the resort caters to both novice and experienced skiers and snowboarders. Modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art artificial snowmaking systems ensure the season’s success regardless of weather fluctuations.

Bakuriani’s prestige has been notably solidified since 2018, when it was named the host resort for the 2023 World Championships at the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Congress, marking a monumental event in its modern history. The culmination of this decision was the Freestyle, Snowboard, and Freeski World Championships held in February–March 2023. This high-standard event was watched by 175 million viewers, firmly placing Bakuriani on the global sports map. Since 2023, along with Gudauri, the resort has been designated as a permanent host on the annual calendar of FIS international sporting competitions.

Beyond the core skiing experience, Bakuriani offers a refined and diverse portfolio of winter activities, cultivating an elegant style of relaxation. Guests can indulge in the romance of night skiing beneath the starry sky, classic fun on the toboggan, or embark on snowmobile tours to explore the wild beauty of nature. Complementing these are serene, aesthetic activities such as ice skating and horse riding. All these offerings firmly establish the resort as a premier epicentre of winter tourism.

Goderdzi

Set high in the mountains of Adjara, at the Goderdzi Pass and 2,027 metres above sea level, the Goderdzi resort is defined by an exceptionally rare climate. Its location — close to the Black Sea yet firmly within the alpine zone — creates a unique fusion of alpine and subtropical influences. This natural phenomenon ensures both the quality and abundance of snowfall, resulting in a long and reliable ski season.

Goderdzi is a destination for those drawn to untouched, unspoiled landscapes. Easily accessible yet refreshingly remote, it lies 260 kilometres from Tbilisi and just 109 kilometres from the coastal city of Batumi. While the total length of marked ski runs spans 8 kilometres, Goderdzi is internationally recognised as a true haven for freeride enthusiasts.

The resort’s natural terrain is adaptable to visitors of varying skill levels, yet its greatest allure lies in the freedom of off-piste skiing. Here, one can glide through open alpine zones, weave between dense coniferous forests, or even ski past traditional Adjarian houses — an experience as poetic as it is exhilarating. Goderdzi also offers a range of premium winter activities, including heli-skiing, cat-skiing, ski touring, and freeride.

Drawn by vast, pristine mountain surroundings, travellers find in Goderdzi a rare sense of seclusion — a place where closeness to nature, silence, and raw adventure converge into an unforgettable mountain experience.

Ultimately, Georgia offers a unique palette of winter adventures that satisfies every priority. If you are seeking extreme freeriding set against cultural depth, your destination is Mestia (Tetnuldi); if the priority is international standards and accessibility, Gudauri is the top choice; for family comfort and eco-relaxation, Bakuriani is ideal; and for unspoiled nature and true seclusion, Goderdzi awaits. Together, these four resorts create Georgia’s unforgettable scene for winter sports and recreation.
